This week I was honored to speak at the #MOMO19 Conference held at Hotel du Parc Montreal. As part of this conference, I had the pleasure of meeting some great people and having the opportunity to talk about my passion project, The School For Creatives.
I spoke to a group of amazing creatives in front of the stage at Le Salon Bleu. My main message was that creativity isn’t just something that happens in front of the camera but rather, that it should happen everywhere. Whether it’s through writing, art, dance, music, photography, cooking, gardening....the possibilities are endless but the key is being willing to give yourself the gift of exploration.

In general, I find that most families can be calmed down quite easily during sessions with us. If they become frustrated because of something going wrong, then we try to figure it out together as quickly as possible.
We always ask that everyone who uses their services to respect confidentiality； therefore, we will only use generic information about clients. However, we would like to mention that many children with special needs require a very structured environment in order to perform well academically or socially. Therefore, it’s imperative that parents understand how their child will react under these circumstances prior to engaging a tutor service provider.
There are several things to bear in mind when working with a family with a student with special needs. As mentioned above, a structure must be created around the child in advance. Some kids thrive better under certain conditions than others. For example, my client, Mika, was diagnosed early on with ADHD and OCD. While I am happy to say that he does extremely well in school without medication, he was unable to focus in class until he started taking Ritalin. His mother had tried other methods but nothing worked until she found me. She explained her son struggles to focus and concentrate； however, he did not respond to typical therapy techniques. After meeting with him, discussing his symptoms and reviewing various options available to treat him, she decided that Ritalin was the route that could work best for him. Once I administered the drug, he immediately became able to sit still and pay attention for long periods of time, something that previously eluded him until I came along. While the treatment helped tremendously and made studying easier for him overall, the side effects are definitely something to consider as a parent.

A: What Is A Eureka Moment?:
A “eureka moment” is something amazing happens once every five minutes for some people like me with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). For most other children my age (say 10 years old), this would be extremely rare, but for kids who struggle socially I get those incredible flashes of understanding all day long. And they are totally unexpected. All you ever see are my eyes squinting together for several seconds before suddenly becoming wide again, while a massive smile blooms across my face. Sometimes I call them the ‘aha’ moments. They are awesome! My parents first noticed these moments happening around 3–4 years ago when I was starting school. It became kind of a running joke among friends, family members, teachers and neighbors. Whenever we saw signs warning against talking loudly for fear of bothering little ones, my mom would always shout: “Oh yeah?! Well talk in class then!” But the truth of the matter is I love being quiet because the ‘aha’ moments come faster than words sometimes, allowing me to connect deeply with students without having to verbalize everything they say — which has helped tremendously during testing periods. I really enjoy teaching, especially math. Since I already have a great grasp on concepts and subjects, it’s relatively easy to teach topics, whether on test days or in regular academic lessons, but it’s definitely harder on tests, since I’m usually the only autistic person in class. During one year in grade 7, I taught grade 8 and 9 classes, taking notes along with the rest of my class. When we had to write exams, as soon as I finished writing mine I could hear whispers coming from various parts of the classroom. Students were saying things like: “Is he still working?” and “I wish I knew what he did on his exam.” As far as the questions were concerned, things went fine.

A: 1. Be a role model – The most effective way to teach children about different people with differences is through example. Parents, teachers, mentors and peers should help show kids who they are meant to be, instead of telling them.
2. Help kids understand themselves better. If a child struggles in school because he/she does not feel like they fit in socially, parents can help by understanding his/her needs and helping him/ her find solutions to address those issues. They could also ask other educators in the community for support.
3. Be positive – Children struggle with anxiety around certain situations, like being teased at school for speaking differently than everyone else (like me). When kids see adults showing respect towards those who talk differently, it shows their own importance.
4. Don’t force things. Sometimes kids with special needs learn faster and better when given choices rather than having everything decided for them. A parent should encourage their kid to explore things independently.
5. Take note of their strengths - Kids often get labelled “differently abled” as soon as they enter grade 1. However, some are born with disabilities which affect their ability to communicate or perform basic functions. Their classmates tend to judge them without knowing their full abilities, but kids often excel despite these disadvantages. Instead of forcing them to participate in sports teams or lessons, it would be wise to let them express their interest and pursue areas of passion instead.

The Internet Is Changing Everything: Here’s Why We Need a New Kind Of Learning in Education

A: What makes tutoring children with disabilities so different than regular classes are the special needs of these kids. Not only does this present unique experiences and opportunities but also provides unique life lessons. However, it requires some adjustment in the way you work, interact with children and parents/guardians. Here are 5 tips to get started:
1.) Be prepared to be adaptable since many of these kids tend to challenge everything around them. Don’t take yourself too seriously just yet. Show patience and kindness even though they sometimes appear rude； they’ll appreciate it down the road.
2.) Take it slow—it’s normal for most adults to feel nervous around children who seem like they’re “special.” But remember, they won’t always behave the same way. They learn differently too. So be patient and follow directions. When giving direction, keep things short, direct, and concise whenever possible. And avoid lengthy explanations because kids prefer to hear stories instead.
3.) Keep calm. Most parents expect you to be able to handle stress well since they hired you specifically because you did great with other young ones. Sometimes though, kids with special needs aren’t necessarily gifted academically, so you should try to prepare for challenging behaviors from time to time. As long as you’ve studied beforehand though, there shouldn’t usually be a problem.
4.) Make friends quickly. Many people say kids pick friendships fast. And in fact, they often form strong bonds instantly. However, kids with special needs tend to bond easier with certain kinds of classmates. For instance, I typically enjoy working closely with peers who play sports, sing loudly, dance wildly, tell jokes, express themselves creatively, and love music. Some kids are shy however, which causes them to stay away from particular groups. Pay attention to group dynamics carefully. Even though everyone loves making new friends, some kids simply want to find someone similar to them.
