Special Needs Tutoring Bedford FAQs
Some kids thrive well enough without specialized classes but some kids really benefit from having dedicated attention paid only to their specific needs. A regular class could still work for most children but in this situation that isn’t feasible.
This article aims to highlight these points, along with some tips to find the ideal teacher for your student(s).
If I was writing this guide today instead of 20 years ago, my recommendations would probably differ quite significantly. At that time, many schools had no idea what autism looked like and they didn’t understand the difference between different types of developmental disabilities such as autism, Asperger’s syndrome, ADHD, dyslexia, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, sensory disorders (including visual impairments), speech issues, anxiety problems, depression, emotional disturbances, OCD, self-injury concerns among other things. I can tell you that if you have a child who struggles in school because of his/her disability, he/she should absolutely go to see someone qualified, preferably an occupational therapist specializing in teaching autistic kids, special education teachers, or social workers trained in working with disabled people. If not, then you’ll certainly need someone else who specializes in dealing with this type of kid.
To sum up, I hope this guide helps you figure out which path is right for your child(ren).
For me personally, my son went through 4 OTs before we found a great fit. He ended up graduating highschool last year. We did everything possible to ensure good schooling for him including making a lot of sacrifices. My wife and I made several attempts to get him placed in mainstream school but every attempt failed miserably due to lack of understanding and proper training.
We’re always looking to hire top talent and recruit some of Canada’s most experienced instructors, teachers and therapists to deliver specialized educational services to students across Ontario...and beyond.. Check out tutortoneradar.ca today.
There are many different ways to support individuals with autism through educational settings; whether you are interested in teaching specific academic areas, working as part of a specialist unit, supporting staff members or leading sessions, finding a job in special needs schools or colleges could be rewarding both personally and financially. Many companies are now offering tailored training programs designed around the needs of those affected by ASD, including some great examples in IT, engineering, business administration, finance, accounting and law.
In addition, there are various other types of jobs available to those working with children/young adults with autism and related conditions, including childcare workers, counsellors, social workers, speech therapists, teachers of different ages and abilities and community service professionals. A good starting point would be contacting local school boards or colleges/universities, or visiting the nearest local authority to see if they offer training and guidance.

At Tutor One, we offer several methods for teaching those who face difficulties in comprehending text, including Dyscalcification Therapy®, Visual Learning Systems™ and Word Smart®, making sure they learn how to overcome this problem easily. We employ the most effective techniques and tools available in order to provide our clients the highest level of care possible to ensure long term improvement.
In terms of our services, we can work alongside a client’s primary specialist teacher so he/she can learn about the program we use for our sessions. Our specialists will then tailor these programs specifically to address whatever areas the student struggles in during his academic studies. For example, students who show difficulty processing information visually can benefit greatly by being introduced to visual learning systems like Cogmed, which will allow him/her to become better prepared and organized at school.

I am fortunate enough to be surrounded daily by teachers and professionals who understand that these conditions do exist, that they need accommodation and support to learn effectively, and that there are solutions available through our education system to help them reach full potential. But for most families this isn’t always the case. So when we talk about “special needs”, we really mean everyone. Everyone who lives with a disability, whether it’s visible like physical, mental, emotional, or behavioural.
The first step towards helping our communities become inclusive places is to recognize that these issues exist, and the first step to recognizing is understanding. Understanding that everyone deserves an equal shot at living happy, healthy, fulfilled lives regardless of their background and circumstances. We must stop seeing disabilities as barriers to overcome and instead embrace our differences, celebrate diversity, and learn how to work together for mutual benefit.
So how do you go about doing this?
1. Understand Your Students
There is no way around this. If you want to help kids with special needs get ahead, you need to spend some time getting to know them. Find out what makes them tick. Learn why certain behaviours happen.
We’ll begin this section by talking about how we got started tutoring children that had learning issues. I’ve always loved kids and teaching since elementary school and decided to become part of my town’s community service club. After working with many schools and seeing first hand just how bad they could get, I was inspired to take action and create something different and better than what already existed.
I wanted to provide an alternative for parents looking for quality education outside of the normal classroom setting and to do so, I founded Tutor One.
Tutors are often called upon by parents who’ve struggled with getting their children’s education “right.” When they find themselves unable to meet educational milestones, they seek guidance from parents and other professionals to get things back on track, especially after the school year ends. While educational institutions offer valuable tools during regular hours, parents usually seek alternative approaches outside school when it becomes evident that conventional methods are failing their kid(s). As teachers try different strategies to reach struggling learners, they must remember that every student is unique.
Parents seeking a specialized approach in their community should consult trusted sources including schools, health organizations or therapists or seek assistance from local agencies. If possible, tutors should also consider meeting parents beforehand so they won’t be surprised by their experience with their child once he/she begins attending sessions.
Bedford County has several options available depending on what type of services your child needs beyond basic academic instruction. A good resource to use are the Education Resources Centre/Community Services & Activities Programs website located at http://www.bedfordmuseums.org/, which includes links with organizations working specifically with youth with disabilities. Other useful sites include www.ednrca.ca (National Research Council Canada), www.dyslexieclubofcanada.
Bedford has a population base of approximately 45,000 people, which includes residents who speak English and/or French. As well, this region is home to many different cultural backgrounds including French Canadian, Germanic, Italian, Russian, Eastern European, Aboriginal, Irish, Portuguese, Scottish, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Polish and Chinese communities, among a few other ethnic groups.
In addition, Bedford’s proximity to Halifax makes this the perfect location to find qualified teachers who can teach in both schools and homeschooling options. With the support of a strong community and dedicated educators like yourself, we aim to provide children with disabilities with opportunities to thrive, learn and become independent adults. We offer specialized programs and therapies designed to enhance the overall quality of life of these individuals. Our highly skilled, experienced staff members strive to create unique environments to meet individual student needs. They work closely with families to identify strengths and weaknesses and develop personalized educational strategies to achieve positive academic outcomes for each child.

Who Should Adopt TutorOne’s Tutoring Methodology?
Every parent knows that the average public school education system has its faults, but few know that there are alternatives. Every year, parents become educated more about the effectiveness of individualizing children’s education. They understand that learning styles and learning strategies vary greatly among students and that students require additional focus and encouragement to excel, especially in subjects such as math, science, and reading. Students learn differently than adults; children absorb knowledge faster and retain it longer than adults can; and they’re less prone to procrastination. TutorOne’s comprehensive approach teaches kids to think positively, and teaches students when they don’t perform up to par.
Testimonial By A Parent Like You
"My son recently turned 15, and started taking Advanced Placement exams. He was doing quite poorly in Spanish II and English III, having scored only a 2 and 3 respectively. With one week left before he needed to take the AP test, I decided to enroll him in TutorOne Private Tutoring. His teacher had told me that he was a bright kid, but just didn’t put forth the effort required to excel. My son came home every day telling me about the amazing learning experience he was having with TutorOne. He did score a 4 on his Spanish II test, and his overall grade point average went from a 2.9 (D) to a 4.8 (A+) in Spanish, and a 1.7 (F) to a 4.0 (A) in English. Most importantly though, my son learned to love his studies and got a kick out of seeing his grades soaring. It was truly eye opening to see how one lesson per week changed everything." ~ Lisa H.,Parent, California
The TutorOne Difference

TutorOne is committed to the belief that every student thrives best in a positive, fun-loving, nurturing learning environment. The TutorOne Difference is about creating an engaging atmosphere in which kids feel motivated to excel. The majority of TutorOne schools operate as small academies; they offer individual learning environments that allow students to interact within a group or with one-to-one tutors.
