We’ve just arrived at the end of another successful school year which is why I thought i’d update y’all regarding some of the events happening after summer break. As most Canadians head back to school next week, and those who remain in Canada return home again to resume university studies soon enough, many people begin planning for the upcoming school year ahead, including teachers like me. Although math class does tend to be the only subject taught during the entire term, we find ourselves preparing lessons to ensure a better understanding amongst students of different grade levels. Here in Toronto however, the issue becomes somewhat exacerbated because unlike most cities across North America, we lack an elementary school system or “middle” school level. Instead, children must attend multiple schools in order to complete secondary education which makes matters complicated since they have to take math courses in several separate settings all through highschool as well. This causes a lot of confusion among parents and children alike but thankfully, things are improving in terms of addressing issues around curriculum gaps. However, while these changes are being made to address current concerns surrounding educational standards, we still face other difficulties. For example, although Toronto Public Schools offers a program known as STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics), students aren’t allowed to join unless they pass English language arts requirements first as per the province’s rules (which as previously mentioned, may pose problems due to various factors). Furthermore, the city in general continues to struggle economically despite having undergone significant improvements over the past few years； consequently, tuition costs continue to rise every single year regardless. As far as standardized testing goes, students in Grade 4 in 2016 scored higher than ever previously yet that isn’t something that we should be celebrating. In fact, I’m convinced that standardized tests should be abolished altogether given that their sole purpose seems to focus primarily on raising test scores without taking into account real life situations or actual problem solving methods instead.

As part of this work, they conduct surveys in five regions worldwide including South East Asia & West Pacific, Latin America and Europe； Middle East, North Africa/Central Asia & Western Sub Saharan Africa； Eastern Mediterranean region； Central sub Sahara Africa； and Australasia.
How Much Information Do I Have Access to?


This study looks specifically at 11+ years old secondary students around the world who take the Global School Study test annually. While GSS collects lots of other info (such as age, gender, living arrangements, family income level, etc), those questions aren’t relevant to this report. Instead, we wanted to focus solely on how often secondary schools offer various subjects, whether or not they allow home schooling opportunities, whether they have specific exam dates, and many other factors which are used to determine how high performing countries stack up against eachother. Our final findings include data relating to 5 continents & 50 countries (with detailed breakdown).
