A: In this tutorial, I am going to provide details regarding my experience working as an online ESOL/English teacher through Tutor One. This article contains some spoilers because I’m giving away information about my job. But since this isn’t exactly your normal touristy post, they aren’t going to be terribly obvious -- just thought you should know ahead of time. So please bear with me until then 🙂
Anyway, enough chit chat! On the first day of class I always introduce myself like this: “Hiya!” And everyone says: “Hi” back and keeps walking toward their desks. So far, no biggie. Everyone’s already got their stuff and seems interested. Then I say something else: “Okay, great! So listen: If you find yourself confused about anything today, come see me.” This is supposed to spark interest among those who haven’t seen anyone yet.
And people keep coming. They’re genuinely curious. After all, why would someone like me tell them things about teaching English?
They’ll eventually notice the desk wedged against mine. My table’s empty except for four books, which represent each subject area covered during the course. When people sit down to take notes, I usually ask questions about grammar to gauge whether they understand everything. For example: How many times have you used ’not’? Or ’there’ versus ’their’. People usually answer correctly. Those answers prove I’ve given the material plenty of attention and hopefully motivated them to put forth extra effort to learn.
At this point the bell rings. Class begins promptly； the lesson runs long--and ends before lunchtime. During these first weeks I’ll spend most days working from home, but sometimes I teach classes at other schools across the city using Zoom. Other days I meet clients at local coffee shops and cafes. Either way, though, on Tuesdays and Thursdays I travel a few miles across town to Eastwood High School.
