A: If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard someone mention nanisms. I was lucky enough to meet several people who had this condition, but the term was often used casually as shorthand for “really bright,” “incredibly intelligent,” or “just plain genius.” But actually nanism refers specifically to a group of developmental disabilities caused by problems during neurodevelopment, usually diagnosed after birth. These include intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), cerebral palsy, epilepsy and other neurological diseases.
There’s no single definition for “what makes somebody autistic” because many conditions fall under ASD diagnosis. And just as with Down syndrome, which affects about.5% of births every year, it isn’t necessarily something anybody wants to hear, whether they love having children themselves, or they have no desire to bring another baby home.

My friend Sarah was born deaf and suffers from mild learning difficulties. Sarah works part time as a student assistant and helps other people to understand basic words and phrases. Her main concern regarding employment opportunities however is whether employers believe deaf employees would be good candidates for positions requiring customer facing duties. Unfortunately many companies still have no idea just how important accessibility is to modern society.
