A: When I started working with special needs children as a teacher many years ago, my first concern was always how am I going to teach this child who cannot speak or express himself? As the years went by, I realized teaching these unique individuals was a challenge, but I discovered a secret weapon to get me through those challenging times.
This tool helped me calm down the most anxious moments and gave me confidence when dealing with the most sensitive situations.
We’ve gathered some tools that we feel would be useful for anyone who works around kids or special needs clients. We hope these ideas and tips can provide you peace during stressful situations that come with being around kids that struggle socially.
1. A good book. If possible find something written specifically for parents. Books like “Raising Resilient Children” and “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen.” These books offer practical strategies for talking with kids about tough topics without getting yourself overwhelmed. They’re not just for moms either — dads should read these too, because they can help them better understand why kids can sometimes act differently than they expect. These books aren’t just great for understanding tough subjects； they’ll help you develop patience and empathy.
2. An audio recorder. When you’re talking about sensitive issues with kids or adults, recording conversations is often necessary. If a parent wants to record their own voice to use as a reminder during a conversation, a voice recording device can work for them. Some devices allow for both video and voice recordings, which makes things even easier.
3. Good headphones. A lot of people forget headphones when trying to listen quietly to kids. If you’re having trouble hearing someone’s tone or words clearly, try wearing headphones and see if that helps.
4. Eye contact. Eye contact isn’t just for adults anymore, especially when it involves kids. Studies show kids who feel uncomfortable with eye contact actually learn less effectively than kids who are comfortable making direct connections.

The sound was of someone banging pots and pans across the floor from the basement level down. At first he thought it must be a friend knocking around but then noticed that the person seemed oddly agitated and loud. Concerned he went back upstairs only to come face to face with a young boy screaming and crying uncontrollably. Upon closer inspection we realized he had a seizure and it appeared as though the only thing stopping him from drowning himself would be pulled away by family members inside the home.
