Special Needs Tutoring St. Thomas FAQs
I spent countless hours trying different strategies to encourage him to pay attention, stay seated and sit quietly until called upon again, and try my hardest to explain complex theories to him. I learned that sometimes you just have to show him something repeatedly over and over and over because repetition makes ideas stick. Sometimes it takes a few tries before the concept actually sinks in and sticks. I knew then that I needed to be patient with myself and my own limits to ensure that our relationship worked long term; and that meant making changes along the way. So I made changes to both our environment and methods of instruction. As time passed, my patience grew and I continued to refine our communication techniques. Eventually I had created a system whereby I taught my little guy everything that I wanted him to learn. And guess what happened next? Well, after years of persevering with my patience, determination and sheer stubbornness, my little man became my student.
In terms of autism tutors, these programs exist specifically for kids whose behavior problems prevent them from attending regular school. While this obviously presents some challenges for autistic children themselves (who generally lack many basic life skills), teachers often benefit from having special needs learners in their classroom or daycare setting. Many of those problems tend to stem from issues related to sensory processing disorder, communication difficulties and cognitive functioning—all areas in which a personal training program that incorporates both traditional teaching methods (i.e. homework assignments and projects, roleplaying exercises, hands-on instruction/demonstrations) and specialized techniques (such as Applied Behaviour Analysis [ABAS], functional behaviour analysis, ABA+, etc.) might prove particularly beneficial. If you’d like to learn more about ABAS, check out www.abasusa.org/.
Other programs offer similar packages, though they’ll vary to fit different educational philosophies.
Some families seek private schooling through charter school organizations, religious institutions, boarding schools, homeschooling groups, or independent special education classes.
In most cases, however, children benefit substantially from inclusion. Research shows that a combination of regular teaching methods, along with specially designed lessons tailored toward individualized needs, is far superior than traditional classroom settings. A few examples include Applied Behavior Analysis, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Physical Therapies, Psychology, Art Therapy.[2][3]

This experience helped me realize that I wanted to be involved in helping people who face issues in life such as learning disabilities.
In 2014 I graduated from SJU with a bachelor degree in Psychology/Counselling. Since then I’ve worked alongside many individuals who struggle to manage everyday life due to things ranging from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, anxiety & depression among other conditions. After working closely with these clients I realized that I could use my passion for psychology combined with my interest in education to provide the best care possible for individuals facing difficulties in managing daily life.
After graduation, I enrolled onto a Masters program studying Education Administration and Leadership. My focus area of study was in the areas of disability awareness and inclusion strategies in elementary schools across Canada. During the completion of my studies I began teaching at both Junior High Schools and Elementary School level. While working with the children I noticed that most struggled with issues relating to self esteem, bullying and the ability to connect with peers which led to their inability to meet grade requirements.
At this point, I decided that teaching wasn’t going to satisfy me anymore so I continued working towards a Bachelorship Degree through the University of Ottawa. At UofO I studied Educational Policy and Planning. Through various courses taught by professors in the fields of Disability Studies; Sociology, Criminal Justice and Community Development; I gained valuable insight in relation to policy development in the field of educational settings. During this period I became passionate and dedicated to supporting those living differently in our community with respect and dignity.
After graduating from UoF I returned back to St.
If you’re like me then most of what people tell you about Dyslexia seems to be something they’ve made up themselves. We all hear people say things like “dyslexic” but nobody ever explains exactly why this word exists; nor does anybody explain which symptoms mean someone is actually dyslexic. If somebody tells you that you read with slowness, perhaps because words run together in your head instead of being arranged in neat little rows in front of your eyes, then you know it’s possible for them to be talking about dyslexia.
And yet many people who would benefit hugely from having some type of special needs support aren’t diagnosed until their children enter school. They don’t realize how far behind other kids are reading and writing until after their child begins school. And since this is often happening in elementary schools they haven’t had a great deal of exposure to Special Educational Education programs. It isn’t just the parents though as teachers tend to lack awareness either. While a lot of them have been told that certain types of pupils struggle with reading and comprehension a large percentage fail to identify that these specific problems exist among their students. Even worse, they won’t recognize or admit that the students’ poor academic achievement stems from dyslexia. All this leaves these individuals trapped in situations where no real action is taken. Many times even after they find out what’s going on the only solutions available seem to be ones no parent wants to pursue. There just aren’t enough places for them to go. Or, they get stuck trying to figure everything out on their own. Not knowing where else to reach out makes life harder than already, especially given that these issues typically develop during childhood and adolescence. When students experience this type of stress combined with inadequate schooling chances are they end up feeling hopeless. Some eventually drop out altogether. Others never get started.
I decided to write a post that would explain why we live in the most advanced country yet still struggle with some issues related to education and support systems for kids with special needs. Maybe this post will inspire someone to consider opening a private program instead of attending traditional ones where they feel uncomfortable.
Our kids deserve better than just passing through life without learning how to become independent adult citizens. They should have chances to get good jobs, go to college, travel the world and enjoy every day, no matter what type of disability they face. Most importantly, parents must take responsibility for helping their children gain these opportunities and prepare themselves to lead happy lives, independently. As adults with special needs, we have learned ways to overcome certain difficulties; the same cannot be said about other people. Who Should Adopt TutorOne’s Tutoring Methodology?
Every parent knows that the average public school education system has its faults, but few know that there are alternatives. Every year, parents become educated more about the effectiveness of individualizing children’s education. They understand that learning styles and learning strategies vary greatly among students and that students require additional focus and encouragement to excel, especially in subjects such as math, science, and reading. Students learn differently than adults; children absorb knowledge faster and retain it longer than adults can; and they’re less prone to procrastination. TutorOne’s comprehensive approach teaches kids to think positively, and teaches students when they don’t perform up to par.
Testimonial By A Parent Like You
"My son recently turned 15, and started taking Advanced Placement exams. He was doing quite poorly in Spanish II and English III, having scored only a 2 and 3 respectively. With one week left before he needed to take the AP test, I decided to enroll him in TutorOne Private Tutoring. His teacher had told me that he was a bright kid, but just didn’t put forth the effort required to excel. My son came home every day telling me about the amazing learning experience he was having with TutorOne. He did score a 4 on his Spanish II test, and his overall grade point average went from a 2.9 (D) to a 4.8 (A+) in Spanish, and a 1.7 (F) to a 4.0 (A) in English. Most importantly though, my son learned to love his studies and got a kick out of seeing his grades soaring. It was truly eye opening to see how one lesson per week changed everything." ~ Lisa H.,Parent, California
