A: If you’re currently enrolled in grade school (Kindergarten/Grade 1), your teacher should be able to accommodate your language needs. Don’t worry if your child isn’t proficient yet； they will pick it up just like kids who speak English! At my son’s elementary school most of his classmates are fluent in both languages. They understand “no problem” or “sorry” without hesitation. He’s had some difficulty understanding the intricacies behind grammar due to being exposed to only one other language but he knows enough to get around just fine. As long as your kid enjoys studying (and takes pride in improving), then French class will go great no matter which version you opt for—whether Canadian, American, or Francais français en Français.
In high schools (grade 9 & 10), many students struggle with math and science classes because they aren’t familiar with those subjects. Fortunately, a few courses offer options that allow foreign learners to improve these areas. Even though I’m not exactly comfortable teaching advanced levels of math in French, I am happy to help students find solutions to problems using calculators. If I have trouble explaining something conceptually, the calculator makes things easier to follow. My experience has taught me that every student learns differently and there’s always going to be a way to teach a subject in multiple ways. So rather than try to explain everything myself, I direct students to books and websites that cover topics related to French math specifically. One book that I highly recommend to anyone struggling with algebra or geometry concepts is “Algebra Made Easy.” Another useful resource would include Maths For Dummies which I’ve found extremely effective for preparing younger students for further study. These lessons involve step-by-step instruction to get them through basic calculations. By introducing this material early in their education, it helps students develop confidence in themselves sooner.
