Math Tutoring St. Catharines FAQs
When I was teaching, I had my own theory on this issue.
I thought that most people who got Cs or Ds actually knew they couldn’t comprehend basic mathematical concepts, and because they were afraid that admitting weakness would result in failure, they simply faked their way through class instead.
On top of that, the average student in Canada scored below grade level in core topics like arithmetic or mathematics, despite having studied these subjects since primary school.
If you’re lucky enough to find yourself surrounded by motivated learners, great things happen — but unfortunately, the majority of young Canadians aren’t able to benefit from such fortunate circumstances. So, let’s talk about some practical ways to improve your chances.
Here’s what I came across during my research project:
1. Ask Your Students to Write Down Their Thoughts When They Don’t Understand Something
Many schools still teach math without allowing students to express themselves honestly. Instead, they rely heavily upon rote memorization and drilling techniques that produce short term improvements rather than long lasting knowledge retention.
This leads to students taking tests where they’ve internalized information, but they haven’t learned anything else.
If you want to see real improvement in test scores, then ask your students to write down every instance where they don’t understand something. Do so after every quiz, homework assignment, or exam (it’ll be tough), and make sure to note whether or not the answers provided in lecture, textbook, online tutorial, or whatever other source material helped to clarify the concept. Then check back after every unit period to see which concepts remain elusive.
2.
Parents tend to underestimate how much kids enjoy math—and overestimate how much they dislike it. If kids dislike math then most won’t find it fun—unless given proper support. However many schools still teach traditional long division which is both boring and ineffective for developing fluency. Our method is far superior because instead of wasting time reciting answers to multiple digit addition problems, students learn how to manipulate algebraic structures like polynomials that actually represent real world concepts. This approach enables students to see connections across various types of equations including linear and quadratic forms, exponential polynomials, rational functions, trigonometric function identities, derivatives, integrals, definite and indefinite integration, series, infinite geometric sums, finite, infinite products, factorials, matrices, determinants, exponents, logs, radicals, ratios, quotients, prime factorization, powers, binomial coefficients, probability calculations, combinatorics, and geometry formulas.
When children begin doing algebra at a young age, they develop problem solving strategies rather than memorize step patterns. In general terms, these strategies include breaking down large arithmetic expressions into smaller segments, eliminating variables, simplifying intermediate steps until arriving at final values for unknown quantities, determining relationships between variables, applying mathematical principles (i.e., associativity), deriving simple rules and formulae, recognizing patterns, finding solutions, performing transformations, predicting, evaluating data sets and making estimations.

I was lucky enough to go to high school with the greatest teachers ever. Mr. Pappas, Mrs. O’Brien and Miss Dickson made math fun again by teaching me how it can be applied practically in everyday situations. Their passion inspired me to become great at this subject.
My first job after university was working for a local bank as a financial analyst. After two months at work, I realized that it wasn’t the place for me anymore. So I decided to move back home to take care of my family business and help people like myself. Since then, I’ve been helping others find solutions to problems related to finance, business management, real estate investment, taxes and accounting.
Nowadays, I use these same tools and techniques to teach others who are struggling with mathematics. If I am able to inspire someone, make him feel better about his struggles, and provide some practical tips to improve his understanding of basic topics like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios, etc., then I’m really doing something worthwhile.

5.
How well does this tutor prepare their lessons?
What type of student have they had previously?
Which parts of school mathematics did the client struggle most with?
Do I feel comfortable with the tutor during lesson 1st contact?
Is he/she qualified enough to help me achieve my Math objectives / desired outcomes?
When it comes to assessing a potential private maths pupil’s preparation level, a tutor’s skill should always come first, afterall this is their speciality area & it gives them great satisfaction knowing exactly what they’re doing. A successful relationship requires an abundance of trust & communication on both parties part. Once rapport is established, then there’s nothing stopping a tutor or parent being able to learn anything they desire whilst receiving exceptional service.
Math tutors typically spend anywhere between 5-8 hours a week working alongside children who suffer under stress induced anxiety, depression, dyslexia & ADHD just to name a few conditions. Having said that, some clients seek individualized solutions because what worked great for someone else won’t necessarily work for them.
In addition, Math tutoring programs offered by schools can have negative effects. For example, many students find themselves trapped inside long term repetitive routines, having learned little beyond basic rules & techniques, without ever experiencing true mastery. Furthermore, some parents believe that standardized testing like the SAT or ACT are flawed instruments used specifically to promote big business interests. Lastly, there are those who oppose the entire concept behind standardized test prep saying it isn’t necessary to gain entry into top tier universities. Therefore, private maths tutoring helps these individuals avoid pitfalls associated with standardized testing and instead focuses exclusively on personal development, thereby guaranteeing outstanding academic achievement.

When applying and enrolling in online courses, it’s always great to see testimonial videos uploaded by current and past students sharing experiences with the platform. For example, we recently saw some amazing reviews posted on the YouTube video below detailing exactly how this program helped alleviate anxiety and enhance concentration during exam times for Ontario high school students. If you’d be interested in seeing those comments yourself, please visit our website and watch this short animated GIF explaining how online programs work at http://www.onlineprogramsontario.org/.
See examples of how this approach to revising curriculums leads to improved outcomes for students in terms of test scores, attitude, self esteem et cetera.
How does this information benefit teachers and administrators? How should curriculum revision take place in schools? Should more support staff be used to assist parents who struggle with raising children? Why would a teacher advocate for these changes?
These questions help to frame the issue from both sides of the table; they represent real problems that need solving rather than being viewed with blind fury. They offer answers worth seeking after.
Teachers: Learn how you can leverage current technology to ensure every child in your school has the same opportunities to excel academically without having to reteach everything year after year. We’ll show you step by step how you can begin implementing lessons aligned to Ontario’s provincial curriculum with support from experienced tech savvy educational consultants. As well, we provide comprehensive training that includes comprehensive lesson planning tools, ongoing webinar follow ups, professional development units, and individualized coaching sessions.
Parents: Find yourself wishing your son had better mathematical foundations than he currently exhibits? Do you wish your daughter was given the same attention that she deserves? Then this guide gives you hope- the first line of attack against poor mathematics performance is to focus exclusively on improving student understanding and conceptual foundation, through regular practice of conceptually challenging exercises designed to improve student problem- solving abilities. By taking away the stress associated with standardized tests and giving families control over the education system, we empower everyone involved to move towards long term solutions, instead of simply reacting to short term crises.
Administrators/School Board Trustees/Boards: If the above reasons appeal to you, then please keep reading below! Our ultimate aim for all concerned parties is similar but different depending upon a particular board mandate.
The other thing to consider is finding a suitable location wherein you can easily access your lesson materials anytime it fits your schedule. Don’t expect someone to pay special attention if he sees that you spend hours staring at your laptop screen when he expects you to focus on your studies. So, the next step toward achieving self-learning effectively is choosing the ideal place for your tutorial sessions. Some teachers often suggest setting aside specific amount of times per week in which they want to give you lessons.

Who Should Adopt TutorOne’s Tutoring Methodology?
Every parent knows that the average public school education system has its faults, but few know that there are alternatives. Every year, parents become educated more about the effectiveness of individualizing children’s education. They understand that learning styles and learning strategies vary greatly among students and that students require additional focus and encouragement to excel, especially in subjects such as math, science, and reading. Students learn differently than adults; children absorb knowledge faster and retain it longer than adults can; and they’re less prone to procrastination. TutorOne’s comprehensive approach teaches kids to think positively, and teaches students when they don’t perform up to par.
Testimonial By A Parent Like You
"My son recently turned 15, and started taking Advanced Placement exams. He was doing quite poorly in Spanish II and English III, having scored only a 2 and 3 respectively. With one week left before he needed to take the AP test, I decided to enroll him in TutorOne Private Tutoring. His teacher had told me that he was a bright kid, but just didn’t put forth the effort required to excel. My son came home every day telling me about the amazing learning experience he was having with TutorOne. He did score a 4 on his Spanish II test, and his overall grade point average went from a 2.9 (D) to a 4.8 (A+) in Spanish, and a 1.7 (F) to a 4.0 (A) in English. Most importantly though, my son learned to love his studies and got a kick out of seeing his grades soaring. It was truly eye opening to see how one lesson per week changed everything." ~ Lisa H.,Parent, California
